Restoration of Sandpiper

Mr. Ian Mackie approached the Boatyard after seeing the quality of restoration work on our website and decided to have a full restoration, new rig and sails.
The boat is a classic National 12 Proctor Mark VIII built by Bob Hoare in 1960. Kevin's passion for wooden boats and restoring them far exceeds working on the glass boats which he has to put up with working on most of the time, and as you can see from the photogtraphs work is well underway, we have removed all the varnish from the cockpit, put in new knees to support the deck, new stringer and glued on the deck, we style the deck area around the shrouds and have to laminate layers of mahogany around the curve to create a more structural deck as there have been problems here in the past.

Once the boat was in the workshop we started to dismantle the old deck and deck stringers to see what we had to play with, as you can see once all the old woodwork was taken out we then scraped all the varnish and paint off the inside of the planking, repaired any cracking and then started putting in new knees, new thwart and seat supports, new deck stringers and then scarfe up new foredecks and side decks.

We decided to laminate the side deck to foredeck area as we do in our Merlin Rockets as it is a better structural job due to the stress areas around the shroud area, once this laminating has been done we then laminated a striped inwhale which then gets glued in, fit the jib blocks, scarfe in the transom capping and planerette the angle for the gunnels to be glued on.
